From teen years til now, I have been recording albums and performing in different acts such as The Cool Losers, P.I.E., The Shrugs and my folk duo, Johnas & Connelly. I most enjoy producing my own solo material and touring these songs stripped down to just an acoustic guitar and my voice. I would call my style progressive-folk. Progressive for having odd, not always predictable song structuring. My records are blends of my musical influences, while trying to add something that I believe to be uniquely me, but probably someone, somewhere had already touched on as I’m fooled into temporarily believing I’ve created a completely brand new sound. I might ground a song in a Townes Van Zandt style finger-picking ballad, while the music production being layered with samples inspired by a Krzysztof Penderecki piece, then mess with the timing of chords ‘til I’m convinced I’ve created something unique. Other times I’ll dream of a song and upon waking, try to get some recording of what I remember as quick as possible. Or the music will just come out of a moment, fully intact with no attempt to contrive and I’ll have been clever enough to have pressed record on some device and have captured it.
As far as modern musicians that I enjoy right now: Adrianne Lenker, Conor Oberst, Joanna Newsom, and Bjork would be some. While not touring, I split my time between New Orleans, Northern California, and Western Canada, which are also the locations I’ve recorded my last three solo records and two Johnas & Connelly records, these consisting of the songs I’m currently playing live.
I’m also the proud papi of a two year old girl who might be a child prodigy musician. Too soon to tell. Will update bio when information is available.
